What it's all about...

It's been so busy lately that I've not really kept on top of the blog, but here goes.

The chickens are doing well and the chicks are growing very fast - though it looks like we have four cocks and just the one hen.

Despite being fairly neglected, the plot has been cropping more than just the usual array of weeds, we are averaging 3/4 eggs a day from the chickens and I pulled the overwintered onions a week ago, some are enormous and very tasty. This weekend, I pulled the garlic and was delighted to find that most had split into cloves; I gave the smaller ones to Brian for his pigeons, as I had promised him, and the rest are drying in the shed with the onions. The first of the courgettes have also been picked.

I also lifted the first of the spud (Arran Pilot) - beautiful new spuds, very tasty and (touch wood) not a trace of slugs/wire worm etc.

We are cropping soft fruits - strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants - like nobody's business and I have made several batches of jam (including rhubarb and ginger which I am about to have on some toast).

We also have peas galore, though the broad beans have been decimated by blackfly and the runners and trail of tears beans are slow to get going...

Lots of other stuff coming through and all very exciting.

This weekend we've had a cheese and onion quiche from our own eggs, onions, peas and courgettes, with our own potatoes on the side, and I made a sausage casserole yesterday that had our onions, garlic and potatoes...

This is what it's all about.
